On The Bandera Frontier: Contributions to the Bandera County Historian 1992-2010 is a concise history about the establishment and growth of Bandera County, Texas. Earl S. Hardin, Jr. conducted an extensive study of all the Secondary historical sources about Bandera County.

Over the years he read all the secondary historical sources he could find about Bandera County. In the 1990s he began a survey of the materials in the Texas State Archives for anything related to Bandera County. This survey included the Adjutant General records and the Governor records from the 1850s to the 1890s. During this time, Earl began writing articles for the county’s historical (sometimes) quarterly, The Bandera County Historian. He continued to update these articles whenever new information arose.  It is these articles that he has gathered together in book form as On The Bandera Frontier.

In the time and region covered, rangers were sometimes called upon to deal with outlaws,but they were generally meant to counter Indian raids. There is some overview history of the settlement of the West Texas Frontier and, perhaps, some genealogical information for area residents.The first chapter presents historical orientation of the region beginning briefly with the Spanish era and surveying relative events up to the founding of Bandera City. The succeeding chapters outline the full-time and minuteman companies of rangers that operated in and around Bandera County, an area and time first described in vivid, but sometimes inaccurate, details by A.J. Sowell, a Texas Ranger who became a writer. He interviewed surviving pioneers and published his Texas Indian Fighters in 1900. Another journalist historian, J. Marvin Hunter, published The Pioneer History of Bandera County in 1922. Elsewhere the story of these rangers is scattered among auto-biographies, oral histories, newspaper articles, and archival documents. In order to transcribe documents as closely as possible, original spellings, in most instances, have been left intact, including "fs" for today's "ss". Editorial comments or corrections are enclosed in brackets. Quotations from Levi Lamoni and Sophia Wight are mostly as edited by Davis Bitton. Muster rolls are transcribed as completely as possible, but some muster roll transcriptions are composites of more than one roll and some are merely summarized. First and middle names, where they have been known, have been added to the list of names for the first Ballantyne's Rangers and for Mitchell's Company.

Relationship: Notes on Love, Mutual Respect, Boundaries, Marriage, and Divorce, is a total departure from anything I’ve previously written but early reviews have been positive as shown below.

Oftentimes clear, true insight comes from someone not “trained” or “educated” in a particular field of thought. This book represents one of those times. The subject of “relationships” is so complicated few outside the legal/ counseling/mental health arenas even attempt to address it for fear of being ignored, misunderstood or, worse yet, laughed at.

The author’s conversational style makes his book about the subject quite easy to read / understand and as one absorbs his meaning . . . believable. It rings so true that as I was reading, I kept wanting to cut out paragraphs to put on my computer, refrigerator and bathroom mirror!

To walk with another person can be as mundane as putting on one’s socks and shoes or it can be a twisting, turning life-changing journey into unknown territory.  It can also be everything in between.  My walk with Virginia was life changing.  It was unexpected.  It was challenging. It was frustrating and confusing.  We had highs and we had lows. Thankfully, it was also awe-inspiring and extraordinary.

Have you ever been a caregiver for a family member or a friend?  Is it, perhaps, on the horizon of your life?  Or maybe you cannot yet see the horizon.  Make no mistake, it is not a question of love, whether to provide much needed, and potentially long-term, care.  It is a question of necessity.

My story is a true account of my care giving experience with my mother-in-law.
